About the speaker:Prof. M. R. Sivaraman obtained his PhD at Physical Research Laboratory Ahmedabad in 1974 and joined Space Applications Centre Ahmedabad. He is now retired and associated with “SpaceTech Consultants”, Ahmedabad.  He has worked mainly in Development of Georeceivers and GPS Receivers; as well as their applications. He conducted Time Synchronisation and Ka Band Propagation Experiments. He has worked in two major Satellite Navigation Programs GAGAN and IRNSS.  He was Deputy Project Director GAGAN. He published more than 50 research papers.


Brief summary of the talks given below: 
1.     Introduction to Geodesy:  A presentation on What is Geodesy,  What is Geometrical and Physical Geodesy,  Applications of Geodesy, Relation between Geodesy and other Sciences, What is Ellipsoid and Geoid and their relations, Coordinate systems used in Geometrical Geodesy, Geodetic Datums.

2.     Introduction to Geodetic Surveying:  Concept of Astronomical positioning, Principle of Triangulation, Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, Principle of Trilateration, Principle of Traverse, Principle of Leveling, Testing Geodetic Survey Network adjustment.

3.     The Coordinate systems and Map Production: Cartesian and Polar coordinates, what is a Datum, Celestial Coordinate System, Equatorial Coordinate System, Horizontal Coordinate System, Conversion of Coordinates, Ecliptic Coordinate System, Coordinate Transformation, Introduction to Map Projection, Different types of Map Projections, their properties, advantages and disadvantages.

4.     Introduction to Satellite Geodesy:  Principle and applications of different Satellite Geodesy Techniques viz Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar  (INSAR), LIDAR, Satellite Altimetry, Laser Altimetry, Satellite orbit determination  and  Earth’s Gravity Field determination, Satellite to Satellite Tracking, Satellite Gradiometry.

5.     Principle of GPS: Basic elements of GPS viz. Space Segment, Control Segment and User Segment, Principle of Ranging, Technique of Pseudorange measurement, Principle of Carrier Phase measurements, Navigation Solution, Sources of errors and error budget.

6.     GPS Survey Techniques: Principle of Carrier Phase measurements, Principle of Differential Positioning, Principle of Different GPS Survey Techniques viz. (1) Static Differential positioning     (2) Pseudokinematic surveying   (3) Stop and Go Surveying    (4) Rapid Static Surveying  (5) RTK (Real Time Kinematic) Positioning,  Applications in Geographic Information System (GIS), Geodynamics, Location Based Services (LBS)
