Space Education and Research Foundation announces, its 16th webinar. This was on “Satellite Meteorology”. This webinar had five scientific talks by Prof. R. Suresh. The live transmission was daily one talk during 06:00 to 07:00 UT on 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd August 2019.

About the speaker (Prof. R. Suresh):
Prof. R. Suresh, a post graduate in Mathematics with 3 post graduate Diplomas in Managerial Science and Systems Analysis and Data Processing joined India Meteorological Department (IMD) as Trainee Meteorologist during 1989 and served in various capacities before his retirement during 2018 as Deputy Director General of Meteorology (Aviation Meteorological Services). He has vast experience in Aviation Meteorology, Radar Meteorology, Mathematical, Statistical and Thermodynamical modelling besides Satellite Meteorology. He received inter-disciplinary Ph.D degree  (Mathematics-Geography) from University of Madras, Chennai, India for his thesis on aviation flight planning.  He has 58 papers published in National / international journals to his credit. His paper on Satellite Meteorology using TOVS data for cyclone track forecasting was awarded prestigious bi-ennial Mausam Award for the term 2002-2003. He introduced online aviation meteorological briefing in India which has more than 2500 international users for which he was awarded a certificate of merit by the Ministry of Earth Sciences during 2007. He delivered more than 100 lectures as plenary/invited/contributory in National / International symposia/workshops besides taking classes on Meteorology and allied sciences for post graduate science & technology courses conducted by various Universities and Colleges/ academic institutions, Civil / defence training Centres. He served as Resource person for WMO Class I and II Meteorological personnel training programs and International Civil Aviation Organisation forums. He has organized many National / international symposium/Workshops. He is currently the Chairman of Indian Meteorological Society, Chennai chapter.

The summary of the talks given below:
Talk 1. Introduction to Satellite Meteorology :  A brief introduction to Meteorology and meteorological parameters and the necessity for improved quality of observations by means of Remote sensing techniques both in time and space scales to understand the micro physics of weather systems, forecasting and warning about severe weather systems have been made. Governing Radiation physics have been explained briefly. Geostationary and Polar orbiting Satellite technology has been spelt in this lecture.

Talk 2: Operational and R & D Meteorological Satellites : In this talk, various types of operational and R &; D Meteorological satellites are described with the payloads.

Talk 3: Satellite image interpretation and products retrieval : Intricacies of satellite image interpretation and products retrieval have been covered briefly in this module. 

Talk 4: Applications of Satellite Data in Weather Studies : In this lecture, potential application of satellite data in day-to-day weather monitoring and forecasting aspects of significant and severe  have been discussed.

Talk 5: Applications of Satellite Data in Climate Studies : Use of satellite data in numerical weather prediction models for seasonal and extended range predictions, climate change related studies have been highlighted in this talk.
