Space Education and Research Foundation (SERF) organized its 20th webinar. This was on “Space Biology” and had four talks one each on 19th, 20th, 23rd and 24th December 2019. Prof. Harish Padh (former Vice-chancellor S. P. University, Vidyanagr, Gujarat, India) and Dr Divya Vats (Director, Regional Metabolic Genetics Clinic, Kaiser Permanenta Southern California, Los Angeles, USA) were the speakers of this webinar. They will deliver two talks each. The live transmission of the talks will be during 06:00 – 07:00 UT.
Please check time  in your zone (for example in India it will be 11:30 – 12:30 local time)

The titles were as below:
Talk1: Life in the Universe (Exobiology) by Prof. Harish Padh
Talk 2: Genetics effects from non-Earth like environment by Dr. Divya Vats
Talk 3: Human Physiology and Space Conditions by Prof. Harish Padh
Talk 4: Clinical problems and Medical care in Space by Dr. Divya Vats

About the speakers:
1. Prof. Harish Padh:
Prof. Harish Padh obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of Delhi in 1978. From 1978 to 1995 for 17 years, he has developed his academic career in USA. In 1996 he returned to India and joined as Professor of Biochemistry at M. S. University of Baroda and in 1999 he joined as Director of PERD Centre in Ahmedabad. He was Project Director for NIPER at Ahmedabad. He joined Sardar Patel University as Vice-Chancellor in July 2010 and continued as VC in his second term ended on July 31, 2016. His area of research is Cell and Molecular Biology as applied to Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prof. Padh has more than 200 research publications in reputed journals.  He has more than 6500 citations; cumulative Impact Factor: 300; h-Index: 40; i10-Index: 90.  He is the member in several Editorial Boards, Societies and IBS Committees of Pharma companies.

2. Dr. Divya Vats:
Dr. Divya Vats grew up watching the night sky at the Thaltej field office of Physical Research Laboratory. But then he went on to complete his residency in internal medicine (in India) and then in Family Medicine (Mercy Medical Center) after medical school. He expanded his horizons further by completing fellowship training in medical genetics and clinical biochemical genetic from University of California San Francisco. He then joined the division of medical genetics at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles and University of Southern California as a clinical assistant professor in 2012 and continues to be a volunteer faculty in the division. In 2015 he joined the Southern California Permanent Medical Group and is the director of the metabolic genetics and the newborn screen program for Kaiser Permanente Foundation Hospitals in Southern California. He still continues to be interested in astronomy and the space sciences. He has several publications in the field of molecular biology and genetics.

Summary of the Talks:
Talk1: Life in the Universe (Exobiology) on 19th December 2019
Speaker: Prof. Harish Padh
This talk will introduce concept of Space Biology as it relates to our overall knowledge - as it evolved during past century. Space Biology as two important components [1] Effect of space conditions on the life forms from the earth, and [2] Examining possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. In this webinar we will examine our attempts to speculate if life is possible anywhere outside our solar system. Our attempts and limitations to detect exobiology - and our desire to learn from exobiology.

Talk 2: Genetics effects from non-Earth like environment on 20th December 2019
Speaker: Dr. Divya Vats
Life has evolved on Earth while the force of gravity has remained constant for a billion years. Therefore, there is little or no genetic memory of life responding to gravitational force changes. During this webinar we will explore the genetic effects of space travel. We will discuss the astronaut twin study and the concept of alien DNA incorporated in human DNA.

Talk 3: Human Physiology and Space Conditions on 23rd December 2019
Speaker: Prof. Harish Padh
As we intend to explore space, we need to understand the effect of space conditions (microgravity, lower temperature, thinner air, higher radiations, variation in magnetic field etc.) on our physiological conditions, health and development. This becomes utmost important as we built permanent space station, explore space tourism and embark upon exploring the universe. Our knowledge gained from manned space trips as well as experiments carried out in model organisms in the space as well as on Earth will be summarized in this talk.

Talk 4: Clinical problems and Medical care in Space on 24th December 2019
Speaker: Dr. Divya Vats
We will discuss the common anticipated problems from space travel and living in non-Earth environment. How can be prevent some of the complications that arise from a non-earth environment? And if they do develop then how do we plan on managing them? We will discuss how aerospace medicine is now an accepted field of medicine which applies knowledge from previous manned missions and from data collected from flight crew member
